Defection Fallout: Three Commissioners Resign as Akwa Ibom Governor Joins APC

Fifteen lawmakers refuse to follow Governor Umo Eno to APC; key appointees exit in protest of political shift.

Political ripples have rocked Akwa Ibom State following Governor Umo Eno’s official defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), triggering the resignation of three commissioners and a divided House of Assembly.

Governor Eno formally joined the APC on Friday at a high-profile ceremony at the Government House Banquet Hall in Uyo, witnessed by APC Governors’ Forum Chairman Hope Uzodinma, Cross River State Governor Bassey Otu, and Unoma Akpabio, wife of the Senate President. He later completed his registration at Obotim Ward in Nsit Ubium LGA, his political base.

However, the governor’s move has sparked dissent within his cabinet and legislature. Out of the 26-member Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, 15 lawmakers declined to switch allegiance, while 11 reluctantly crossed over with him to the APC.

The fallout continued in the executive arm as three commissioners tendered their resignations in response to the defection directive. The outgoing officials include:

Engr. Eno Ibanga – Commissioner for Works

Ini Ememobong – Commissioner for Special Duties and Ibom Deep Seaport

Emem Almond Bob – Commissioner for Finance

In his resignation letter shared via Facebook, Ememobong described the decision as principled and rooted in ideological opposition to the APC. He noted that Governor Eno had earlier instructed political appointees unwilling to join the APC to resign.

“While I cannot question or fault the Governor’s personal decision, I am unable to join in that sojourn,” Ememobong stated. “My decision is borne out of my belief in politics with principles and my long-standing opposition to that political platform.”

Despite stepping down, Ememobong expressed deep respect for Governor Eno and appreciation for his role in the administration, particularly his leadership of two strategic ministries. He also acknowledged former Governor Udom Emmanuel’s support in his public service career.

As Akwa Ibom’s political dynamics continue to shift, the PDP finds itself battling internal resistance and growing defections, setting the stage for an intense realignment ahead of 2027.
