Diphtheria Outbreak Forces School Closures in Imo State’s Mbutu Communities
Imo Government shuts schools as health officials race to contain diphtheria outbreak in Aboh Mbaise LGA.
The Imo State Government has ordered the immediate closure of all schools in and around Mbutu communities in Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area following a confirmed outbreak of diphtheria.
The directive, issued by the Commissioner for Primary and Secondary Education, Prof. BTO Ikegwuoha, is a precautionary measure aimed at safeguarding the health of students and preventing the spread of the highly contagious bacterial disease.
“To prioritize the health and well-being of our children, we are shutting down schools in the affected areas until further notice,” Prof. Ikegwuoha said.
Parents and guardians have been advised to ensure their children are fully vaccinated, especially with the diphtheria vaccine, and to promote proper hygiene, such as regular hand washing and avoiding close contact with anyone showing symptoms.
Common symptoms of diphtheria, according to the state government, include: Sore throat,
Fever
Swollen glands
A thick, gray membrane covering the throat and tonsils
Difficulty breathing
Prof. Ikegwuoha added that the Ministry of Education is working closely with the Ministry of Health and the Aboh Mbaise Department of Health to prevent further spread.
“All stakeholders — teachers, pupils, parents, guardians, and community leaders — must collaborate with healthcare workers in their localities,” he urged.
Parents have been told to closely monitor their children’s health and seek immediate medical attention if they observe any unusual symptoms.
The Imo State Government says more guidance and updates will be released as necessary, while reaffirming its commitment to containing the outbreak and protecting public health.
