2027 Presidency: All Candidates Should Emerge from South West — Dr. Lamido
Arewa Summit Leader urges South East to produce President in 2031, says zoning fosters unity and national healing.

Dr. Bashir Lamido, leader of the northern-based political think tank Arewa Summit International, has called for all political parties to field presidential candidates from the South West in the 2027 elections, with a similar opportunity granted to the South East in 2031.
Speaking at a high-level political dialogue on zoning and national cohesion held Friday in Abuja, Dr. Lamido argued that the proposed rotational formula would promote equity, inclusion, and long-term stability in Nigeria’s democratic system.
“For the sake of equity, national integration, and the stability of our democracy, we believe the South West should present all presidential candidates in 2027. Then, come 2031, the South East — which has long awaited its turn — should be given the full platform to produce the next president,” he said.
Dr. Lamido emphasized that the suggestion was not intended to marginalize any group but to build trust and foster a sense of belonging across Nigeria’s diverse regions.
“This is not just about politics. It’s about healing, trust-building, and showing every Nigerian that they belong to the same nation.”
Responding to potential criticisms from Northern stakeholders, Dr. Lamido reminded Nigerians that the North has historically held the presidency more than any other region, and now is the time to give room for others to lead.
“People may ask, what about the North in 2031? They forget the North has spent more years in leadership. We must balance the leadership structure across the country,” he noted.
Arewa Summit International, under Lamido’s leadership, has increasingly positioned itself as a pan-Nigerian voice pushing for policies that enhance national unity and regional fairness.
