2027 Elections: PDP Still a National Force Without Coalition — Abba Moro Insists

Senate Minority Leader rejects merger suggestions, says dropping PDP’s identity is off the table

Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro has firmly ruled out any necessity for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to enter a merger or alliance in order to remain relevant ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.

In a recent interview on Africa Independent Television (AIT), Moro emphasized that the PDP remains a formidable political entity with nationwide influence, despite recent defections and internal dissent.

“PDP is a household name in Nigeria,” Moro declared. “From the remotest villages to the urban centers, we have structures, loyalists, and active members. That brand identity cannot be underestimated.”

The comments come amid growing public speculation over potential coalition plans among opposition parties in preparation for the next election cycle. Some PDP governors have reportedly expressed hesitation over such moves, leading to debates within political circles.

While Moro acknowledged that strategic alliances may be considered, he drew a clear line against any arrangement that would dissolve the PDP’s identity.

“A coalition is acceptable if it strengthens our democratic goals,” he said. “But a merger that requires discarding the PDP name is a non-starter. That’s a dangerous move. The PDP name carries weight — it’s our asset, and we’re not letting it go.”

Moro’s remarks appear to be a signal to both party loyalists and opposition groups that while the PDP is open to collaboration, it intends to preserve its identity as Nigeria’s longstanding political force.

With the 2027 elections on the horizon, the PDP’s strategy and internal cohesion are likely to remain in the spotlight as the party seeks to position itself as a viable alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
