Seplat Energy PLC has called for enhanced collaboration across the gas value chain to transform Nigeria’s gas potential into significant economic prosperity.
The company’s Managing Director, Oladotun Isiaka, made this call at the ongoing Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) in Houston, United States. According to Isiaka, Nigeria is in a unique position to leverage its vast gas reserves for both domestic development and to become more competitive on the global stage.
Strategic Opportunity for Growth
Isiaka highlighted that indigenous leadership in the gas sector, coupled with supportive policies and innovative financing models, is crucial for the growth of Nigeria’s gas industry. He emphasized the strategic importance of gas in driving the nation’s economic transformation, underscoring the sector’s potential to support both local and global energy demands.
Seplat Energy plays a pivotal role in Nigeria’s energy landscape. The company operates the Oben and Sapele Gas Processing Plants, which together have a combined capacity of over 300 MMscfd, contributing approximately 30% of the country’s gas-fired power generation. Additionally, Seplat is advancing the development of the ANOH Gas Processing Plant, a 300 MMscfd facility set to come online in 2025. This project is being developed as a joint venture with the Nigerian Gas Infrastructure Company (NGIC), a subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd (NNPC).
Seplat’s Vision for Nigeria’s Gas Revolution
Isiaka reaffirmed Seplat’s commitment to leading Nigeria’s indigenous gas revolution, emphasizing the company’s belief in the power of gas to drive sustainable and inclusive energy solutions. He stated, “Seplat Energy is focused on the vision of energy for all, powered by gas, and guided by principles of sustainability and Nigerian expertise.”
During a panel discussion titled ‘Harnessing Nigeria’s Gas Potential for Domestic Utilisation and Global Export Market’, organized by the Petroleum Technology Association of Nigeria (PETAN), Isiaka further stressed the huge potential of Nigeria’s gas resources, noting that the country boasts over 200 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) of proven gas reserves, placing it among the top 10 globally.
The Path to Economic Transformation
Nigeria is at a critical inflection point, according to Isiaka, and it must now seize the opportunity to use its gas reserves to power its population, industrialize, and capitalize on global export markets. He argued that gas is not merely a transition fuel but rather the growth engine that will shape the country’s energy future.
“Gas must displace biomass, which is still widely used for cooking, and oil-based fuels like diesel, which are common in power generation sets across the country,” he added.
A Vision for the Future
Seplat Energy’s call for collaboration and innovation in Nigeria’s gas sector is a significant step towards unlocking the country’s vast energy potential. With its ongoing and upcoming projects, including the ANOH Gas Processing Plant, Seplat is poised to play a leading role in transforming Nigeria into a global energy powerhouse, all while prioritizing sustainability and local empowerment.
