Lagos Launches 24/7 Smart Traffic Surveillance, Expands Fibre Infrastructure in Digital Push
With the second phase of its 3,300km Metrofibre rollout and new AI-powered initiatives, Lagos accelerates its smart city agenda and public safety strategy.
The Lagos State Government has activated a 24-hour intelligent traffic enforcement system and launched Phase 2 of its ambitious 3,300-kilometre Metrofibre Project, marking a major step in its smart city transformation and digital infrastructure agenda.
Unveiled during the 2025 Ministerial Press Briefing in Alausa, the new initiatives reflect Lagos’s growing focus on leveraging technology to improve public safety, streamline services, and support economic development.
Commissioner for Innovation, Science, and Technology, Olatubosun Alake, said the round-the-clock surveillance infrastructure will improve real-time traffic management and security monitoring across the state.
“A truly digitised city requires seamless integration between physical and digital systems,” Alake said, noting that Lagos aims to deploy up to 6,000km of fibre optic cables and ducts in total. He described the project as essential to deepening digital connectivity, enabling faster government operations, and boosting investor confidence.
The traffic monitoring system forms part of a broader three-phase rollout of smart surveillance and infrastructure upgrades designed to provide comprehensive oversight of Lagos’s transportation corridors. The goal is not only smoother traffic flow but also enhanced public safety and emergency response.
The commissioner also revealed that the state is nearing completion of its Lagos Digital Services Platform—a one-stop portal for residents to access government services, from documentation to real-time updates.
As part of its broader AI adoption strategy, Lagos plans to integrate artificial intelligence into public service delivery, including the use of chatbots and algorithm-driven service optimization. The state also intends to publish AI governance guidelines to support ethical innovation.
On cybersecurity, Alake disclosed that Lagos recently foiled two major data exfiltration attempts, underscoring the importance of strong digital defences. Over 100 certified Data Protection Officers have been deployed across ministries and government agencies to ensure compliance and protect citizen data.
“The Sanwo-Olu administration’s vision goes beyond digital efficiency—it is about safeguarding lives, enhancing governance, and unlocking opportunity for every Lagosian,” Alake said.
Lagos continues to position itself as Nigeria’s digital trailblazer, building infrastructure that supports both governance and grassroots access to the digital economy.
