North-East Governors to Tackle Insecurity with Multi-Dimensional Strategy

Forum adopts kinetic and non-kinetic approaches, urges FG to complete road projects and expand youth development efforts

The North-East Governors’ Forum has resolved to adopt a multi-dimensional approach to combating insecurity in the region, combining military strategies with youth empowerment, infrastructure development, and poverty alleviation.

The resolution was announced in a nine-point communiqué read by Governor Agbu Kefas of Taraba State at the close of the forum’s 11th meeting held in Damaturu, Yobe State, on Thursday.

Chaired by Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State, the Forum acknowledged the Federal Government’s commitment to national security but expressed concern over the resurgence of insurgent activities in some parts of the North-East.

“The Forum calls on the Armed Forces, other security agencies, and community leaders to reappraise their counter-insurgency strategies to better tackle the evolving threats,” the communiqué stated.

In addition to security, the governors emphasized the need to address youth unemployment, poor infrastructure, weak education systems, and widespread poverty, which they identified as root causes of insecurity.

They also decried the deterioration of federal roads in the region, saying the poor infrastructure worsens insecurity and stalls economic recovery. The governors urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to prioritize the completion of abandoned road projects across the region.

Looking ahead, the Forum pledged increased collaboration to attract investments in agriculture, renewable energy, climate adaptation, and vocational training, aimed at creating jobs and reducing youth vulnerability to extremist ideologies.

The governors also Commended the North-East Development Commission (NEDC) and called for deeper stakeholder engagement and prioritization of road and transport infrastructure.

They supported the expansion of the Nigerian Law School Yola Campus, pledging support for hostel accommodation, water, and other facilities.

In addition, they backed the National Commission for Al-Majiri and Out-of-School Children Education, promising to provide offices in each state and implement a unified regional reintegration strategy for out-of-school children.

The meeting was attended by the governors of Adamawa, Borno, Gombe, Taraba, and Yobe, while Bauchi State was represented by its Deputy Governor.

The 12th session of the Forum is scheduled to hold from July 27 to 29, 2025, in Jalingo, Taraba State.
