The Presidency has pushed back against allegations that President Bola Tinubu is attempting to turn Nigeria into a one-party state following the series of defections from opposition parties to the ruling APC.
Presidential spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, clarified that political realignments are common in democracies and do not signify an erosion of democratic values.
Onanuga stated that the Tinubu administration remains committed to upholding Nigeria’s multi-party democracy, emphasizing that the decisions by politicians to switch parties are personal and not the result of coercion.
He accused opposition figures of raising unnecessary alarm to mask their internal problems.
He further noted that under Tinubu, Nigeria’s democratic institutions have remained independent and active, citing the vibrant legislative arm and judiciary as evidence.
According to the presidency, rather than diminishing, Nigeria’s democracy is evolving, with citizens retaining the right to freely associate with political parties of their choice.
