First female Army spokesperson Lt Col Anele Onyinyechi Appolonia Assumes Duty, Promises Proactiveness

In a landmark moment for the Nigerian Armed Forces, Lieutenant Colonel Anele Onyinyechi Appolonia has officially assumed duties as the Acting Director of Army Public Relations (DAPR), becoming the first female officer to hold the prestigious role in the history of the Nigerian Army.

The handover ceremony, held on Tuesday at the Army Headquarters in Abuja, marked the formal departure of Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, who bowed out after an impactful tenure spanning nearly four years.

In a heartfelt farewell address, Maj Gen Nwachukwu described his time as Army spokesperson as both “eventful and fulfilling”, noting the transformative strides taken under his leadership.

“When I took on this noble responsibility on June 16, 2021, I was under no illusion about the magnitude of the task ahead,” he said. “But today, I stand proud of how we faced those challenges—head-on, with vision, innovation, and an unwavering sense of purpose.”

During his tenure, the Directorate recorded several milestones, including the acquisition of state-of-the-art multimedia infrastructure, the establishment of a Strategic Communications Centre, and the launch of Nigerian Army Info TV, a digital platform designed to broaden outreach and public engagement.

Taking the reins, Lt Col Anele delivered a poised and passionate inaugural address, expressing profound gratitude to the Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Taoreed Lagbaja, for entrusting her with what she called a “historic and humbling” responsibility.

“It is an honour I do not take lightly,” she said. “To be the first woman to serve as spokesperson for the Nigerian Army is not just a personal milestone—it is a testament to the evolving culture of inclusivity and meritocracy within our military.”

Lt Col Anele praised her predecessor for laying a solid foundation of excellence, promising to build on that legacy with transparency, professionalism, respect, and proactiveness.

“Major General Nwachukwu’s passion and professionalism have set an exemplary standard. I deeply value his guidance and enduring legacy,” she added.

Highlighting the critical importance of media relations, Anele assured journalists of continued collaboration rooted in mutual respect and national interest.

“We will continue to tell the Army’s story not only through words, but through consistent action that reflects honour, sacrifice, and service to the nation,” she said.

She further charged the officers, soldiers, and civilian staff of the Directorate to remain “loyal, hardworking, focused, and united”, emphasizing that collective effort is key to elevating the Directorate to new heights.

“As we work together to protect Nigeria’s peace, unity, and sovereignty, let us do so with a shared vision, unwavering dedication, and a deep commitment to excellence,” she concluded.

Lt Col Anele’s appointment represents a powerful symbol of progress within Nigeria’s defense establishment and sets a precedent for gender inclusion at the highest levels of military leadership.
