The Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the South-West has formally dissociated itself from the recently formed coalition of opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.
This was disclosed on Saturday by Femi Olaniyi, who serves as the Chairman of Chairmen for the party across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. He made the statement during the South-West Stakeholders’ Meeting held at the SDP Secretariat in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Olaniyi stated that rather than joining the coalition, the party is focusing on building its own strategy to unseat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) at all levels in the next general elections.
Recall that several opposition parties had formed a coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) platform. The alliance reportedly includes prominent figures such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, former Senate President David Mark, and ex-governors Rauf Aregbesola and Nasir El-Rufai.
However, Olaniyi clarified that the SDP in the South-West will not be part of the coalition at this time. He emphasized that no decision on the matter can be made without directives from the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), which has yet to issue a formal position.
