Alcaraz Defeats Sinner to Win Italian Open, Ends 26-Match Streak

Carlos Alcaraz claimed the Italian Open title on Sunday with a commanding 7-6 (7/5), 6-1 victory over Jannik Sinner in the final held in Rome.

The win marks Alcaraz’s third title of the season and provides a major confidence boost heading into the French Open, which begins next Sunday. With this result, Alcaraz will move up to world No. 2 in the ATP rankings, just behind Sinner.

Alcaraz remains the only player to have defeated Sinner multiple times since the beginning of last year, and Sunday’s win extended his streak over the Italian to four consecutive victories. The triumph also snapped Sinner’s impressive 26-match winning run, which had dated back to October — a streak that began shortly after Alcaraz had last beaten him in a tense China Open final decided by a third-set tiebreak.

With Sunday’s result, Alcaraz now leads their head-to-head rivalry 7-4.

The match in Rome was also significant as it marked Sinner’s return to competition following a three-month doping suspension — a factor that added further intensity to the showdown in front of his home crowd at the Foro Italico.
