Zinedine Zidane has resigned as the manager of Real Madrid with immediate effect; just days after the club were beaten by Atletico Madrid to clinch the La Liga title.
The Frenchman’s departure comes at the end of a disappointing campaign for the 13-time European champions, who lost to Chelsea in the Champions League semi-finals as they failed to win a trophy for the first time in 11 seasons.
In an official statement, the Spanish club said Zidane is a great icon and his legacy extends beyond what he achieved as a coach and player at the club.
“It is now time to respect his decision and show our appreciation for his professionalism, dedication and passion throughout all these years, and for what he represents as his figure for Real Madrid,” the club said.
In two spells as Real Madrid’s coach, Zidane won the Champions League three times and the Spanish league twice, but finished the 2020/2021 season without a trophy.
The Spanish giants are yet to announce a new coach.
