Zarephath launches intervention program targeting 1000 inmates

As part of measures to decongest correctional facilities in the country, Zarephath Aid has launched project 1000, a legal aid intervention program which targets ten thousand awaiting trial inmates across the six geopolitical zones in Nigeria.

Speaking at a media briefing in Lagos, founder of Zarephath Aid, Ben Abraham, lamented the overcrowded state of correctional facilities in the country. According to him, as at February 2021, 73.2 percent of inmates across the country are awaiting trial hence the urgent need for decongestion.

He also lamented the poor state of the judicial system, as he called on relevant authorities to look into the affairs of unlawful police detention which is one of the major causes of congestion in the facilities.
