The United Nations has called for prioritization of quality education for the girl child across the world. The UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, made the call in a video message to commemorate the International Women’s Day on Tuesday. Guterres in his address lamented that women and girls have frequently borne the brunt of the consequences of the COVID-19 virus spreading worldwide, resulting in women doing the vast majority of the world’s unpaid but essential care work. To remedy the situation, he thereafter called for guaranteed quality education for every girl, massive investments in women’s training and decent work, effective action to end gender-based violence, and universal health care.
