UK approves Valneva’s COVID-19 vaccine

The United Kingdom has approved Valneva’s COVID-19 vaccine, becoming the first European country to clear the use of the French firm’s shot.

Announcing the approval, the UK’s Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency said it was the first, whole-virus inactivated COVID-19 vaccine to gain approval in the UK.

The agency maintained that the shot met safety, quality and effectiveness standards.

The go-ahead is the sixth vaccine approval by Britain and the approval comes amid the 1.4 billion euro deal to buy the Valneva shot which was scrapped last September, alleging the company was in breach of its obligations under the agreement which the firm denied.

The Valneva jab is made in Scotland and has been found in trials to potentially offer better immunity and fewer side effects than the commonly used AstraZeneca vaccine, including against Omicron and new variants.
