Tunisian president seriously ill

Tunisia’s president, Beji Caid Essebsi is undergoing treatment in the hospital after suffering a “severe health crisis”.

The presidency confirmed that he was taken to a military hospital in a critical condition but was alive.

Prime Minister Youssef Chahed said on Facebook that Essebsi was receiving the attention he needed and that people should stop spreading fake news about his condition.

There had been reports that the president had died.

The 92-year old head of state was hospitalised last week, for what the presidency described as non-serious treatment.

Essebsi has been a prominent figure in Tunisia since the overthrow of Zine El-Abidine Ben Ali in 2011. He won the country’s first free elections in 2014 following Arab uprisings across the region.

Earlier this year, Essebsi announced he would not stand in elections expected in November, saying someone younger should take charge.
