The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has boosted the national grid by adding 5,910 megavolt-amperes (MVA) of transformer capacity, a significant upgrade that enhances electricity transmission across the country.
Aminu Tahir, General Manager of Project Coordination and Technical Assistant to the MD/CEO, announced the development during an update on ongoing projects under TCN’s Project Management Unit (PMU). He highlighted that many projects funded by the World Bank, Agence Française de Développement (AFD), and the African Development Bank (AfDB) are either completed or nearing completion, with procurement processes for the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) projects in Lagos and Ogun States in the final stages.
“These projects have significantly strengthened the national grid, adding 5,910 MVA of transformer capacity to date,” Tahir said.
In a related update, TCN confirmed the restoration of bulk power supply nationwide via the Kainji-Birnin Kebbi 330kV Transmission Line. The line was disrupted on May 7 when three towers collapsed due to a severe windstorm.
TCN swiftly deployed three contractors to begin emergency repairs. However, during the reconstruction, another windstorm caused the collapse of three additional towers at Galadima Village in Kebbi State’s Shanga Local Government Area, necessitating the involvement of extra contractors to expedite repairs.
“Work continued around the clock alongside our supervising engineers to restore the transmission line, which was successfully re-energized earlier today,” said Ndidi Mbah, General Manager, Public Affairs, TCN. “We appreciate the patience and understanding of the affected communities during this period.”
TCN reaffirmed its commitment to delivering efficient and reliable electricity transmission to distribution centers nationwide.
