Sunday was a big night for Nigerian contemporary music, Afrobeats, which has come to be known as the Fela-inspired genre. The genre got its biggest validation with three Grammy wins from three of its most prominent stars Burna Boy, Wizkid and Tiwa Savage.
The 63rd Annual Grammy Awards saw the three Nigerian stars take home the coveted trophy.
Burna took home the Grammy Award for ‘Best Global Music Album’ with his 2020 project Twice as Tall, while Wizkid’s win came courtesy of his feature on Beyonce’s ‘Brown Skin Girl’, which won the award for Best Video.
Meanwhile, Afrobeat’s First lady, Tiwa Savage also made history by being the first Nigerian woman to win a grammy with her feature in coldplay’s album, Everyday Life.
Femi Kuti and Made Kuti also featured on coldplay’s album. The Kutis featured on Arabesque where Femi Kuti had a Trumpet solo.
