Ten pupils have died with seven others seriously injured in a fire which broke out at a school dormitory in north-western Tanzania’s Kagera region.
The fire started at one of the dormitories of Byamungu English Medium Primary School at around 04:30 local time.
Regional Commissioner Marco Kaguti, said the deceased – aged between six and 12 – and the critically injured had inhaled smoke and were overpowered by the flames.
He added that the bodies were burnt beyond recognition and will need DNA tests to confirm the victims’ identities.
No fewer than 74 students were resident in the dormitory and the death toll is expected to rise.
The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, however, the police have started investigations into the incident.
