In a recent interview with Yanga FM Lagos, the artiste spoke candidly about how the skin condition nearly pushed him out of the spotlight.

“It Was Terrible”

Cheque described his battle with acne as overwhelming, admitting that it left him embarrassed and socially withdrawn.

“I struggled with acne years back. It was terrible,” he said. “My desperation to cure it led me to buy a makeup that almost disfigured my face. It was embarrassing. I almost quit music. I couldn’t even approach women then.”

According to the singer, the situation worsened after his breakout single, Zoom, gained attention and he secured a record deal. With more interviews and camera appearances ahead, he felt pressured to improve his appearance.

As someone who describes himself as a perfectionist, Cheque said he purchased a product from a store in hopes of clearing his skin. Instead, he woke up one morning to find his face badly affected.

“I realised my whole face had been damaged,” he recalled.

Turning Pain Into Music

The experience, he said, later became creative fuel. Cheque disclosed that the ordeal partly inspired his hit collaboration, History, featuring Fireboy DML.

Beyond his music, the acne struggle also impacted his social interactions and made him uncomfortable in front of cameras.

His revelation adds to growing conversations among young artistes about mental health, self-image, and the pressures that come with fame in Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
