Despite maintaining a strong position in the table, Emery used his post-match media appearance to distance the West Midlands side from the race for the Champions League places.

The defeat leaves Villa seven points adrift of league leaders Arsenal and level with Manchester City, though they remain well ahead of fifth-placed Manchester United. Thierno Barry’s second-half goal secured the points for David Moyes’ side, leaving a visible sense of frustration on the Villa bench. Pundits described Emery’s subsequent interview as bizarre, as he repeatedly insisted that his squad currently lacks the depth and resources of the division’s traditional heavyweights.

While fans expected the manager to rue a missed opportunity to close the gap on the Gunners, Emery instead focused on the long-term limitations of his roster. He suggested that several rival clubs possess greater potential to maintain their form over the grueling second half of the season. The Spaniard now turns his attention to a midweek European fixture and a difficult trip to Newcastle, hoping to reignite a campaign that remains one of the club’s most successful in recent history despite his pessimistic comments.

Emery shared his candid assessment with Sky Sports: “We are not contender to be in the top five. We are still not being contenders. There are other teams with more potential than us.”
