Wike made the remarks on Saturday during the 36th Convocation Ceremony of the University of Port Harcourt, where he delivered a lecture titled “Leadership and Infrastructure Development in Nigeria: Lessons for Future Leaders.”

He described ongoing infrastructure projects under the Tinubu administration as evidence of what he called purposeful leadership aimed at national transformation.

According to him, the President has demonstrated the courage to make difficult decisions and mobilise resources toward addressing Nigeria’s infrastructure deficit.

“What the present moment offers is a rare and defining possibility,” Wike said, adding that the administration has shown the capacity and political will needed to bridge Nigeria’s development gaps.

He argued that infrastructure remains the most reliable measure of effective leadership, noting that roads, railways, housing, power, and digital systems form the backbone of economic and social progress.

Wike said some projects currently being executed were inherited from previous administrations but have since been given renewed direction and urgency under the present government.

He listed major projects such as the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway, Sokoto–Badagry Super Highway, Abuja–Kaduna–Zaria–Kano Road, the East–West Road, and access roads to the Second Niger Bridge as key examples of ongoing national infrastructure efforts.

The minister also highlighted investments in rail development, including rehabilitation work on the Port Harcourt–Maiduguri corridor and expansion of standard gauge rail networks across the country.

On power, he referenced the Presidential Power Initiative in partnership with Siemens, alongside rural electrification and metering programmes aimed at improving electricity supply and consumer access.

Wike further pointed to initiatives in aviation, housing, broadband expansion, security infrastructure, and education, including the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), as part of broader reforms aimed at strengthening national development.

He described the removal of fuel subsidy as a difficult but necessary decision, arguing that it has created additional fiscal space for infrastructure investment at both federal and state levels.

“Transformative leadership often requires the courage to choose long-term stability over short-term comfort,” he said.

Wike maintained that Nigeria’s progress should be measured not by the number of projects announced, but by their completion and real impact on citizens.

He also warned that sustainable development would remain difficult without continued investment in key sectors such as transportation, power, healthcare, and education.

He described the alleged actions as “the last kick of a dying horse,” insisting that his faction remained unshaken and continued to regard itself as the legitimate leadership bloc within the party.

Sani said his group was waiting for the Certified True Copy of the recent Supreme Court judgment, which he believes will shape the next phase of the leadership battle rocking the opposition party.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has accused some political leaders of allegedly misleading Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, amid the ongoing political tension in the state.

Wike made the allegation while addressing supporters in Ogu/Bolo Local Government Area of Rivers State. He insisted that agreements reached before President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, following efforts to resolve the protracted political crisis in the oil-producing state, must be honoured by all parties involved.

According to the former Rivers State governor, the agreement was formally signed by key stakeholders, including former governor Peter Odili, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, leaders of major political parties, and other senior officials. He alleged that Governor Fubara failed to abide by the terms of the accord despite endorsing it.

Wike further accused some political actors of publicly contradicting the agreement after initially supporting it, describing such conduct as irresponsible and capable of undermining peace and stability in the state.

He warned that political statements and actions have consequences, stressing that misleading narratives can damage trust and fuel instability over time.

The FCT minister emphasised Rivers State’s strategic political importance within the South-South region and urged leaders to exercise caution and honesty, particularly when dealing with sensitive issues that affect governance and public order.

Reflecting on past political events, Wike recalled attempts by some factions to dismantle the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) structure in Rivers State during a previous convention. He said those efforts ultimately failed, adding that subsequent political developments had exposed the futility of such actions.

Reaffirming his commitment to equity, fairness, and justice, Wike stated that his political decisions have always been guided by principle rather than personal interest or party considerations.

He expressed appreciation to the people of Ogu/Bolo for their consistent support over the years, particularly during challenging political periods. Wike also commended President Tinubu for what he described as unprecedented federal appointments of Rivers State indigenes, saying the President had demonstrated sincerity by honouring agreements reached with stakeholders.

Speaking at the gathering, Chairman of the Rivers Ijaw Peoples Congress, George Sekibo, criticised Governor Fubara, describing him as ungrateful and declaring support for Wike. He said Ijaw leaders would mobilise politically against Fubara’s re-election bid.

Also addressing the gathering, the Executive Director of Finance at the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Boma Iyaye, assured Wike of continued support from the Ogu/Bolo people and praised him for facilitating key appointments and development projects in the area.

Earlier, the Chairman of Ogu/Bolo Local Government Area, Vincent Nemieboka, highlighted several development initiatives attributed to Wike’s influence and reaffirmed the loyalty of the local council and its residents.

The meeting drew political leaders, traditional rulers, chiefs, and other stakeholders, and featured cultural and traditional performances to welcome the FCT Minister and his entourage.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has approved the elevation of 49 Deputy Directors to the rank of Director across key departments of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA).

The development follows the conclusion of the first-ever computer-based promotion examination organized by the FCT Civil Service Commission on August 12, 2025, at the National Open University Centre in Bwari Area Council.

According to a statement released by Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant to the Minister on Public Communications and Social Media, the exercise was designed to resolve outstanding promotion cases for officers on Grade Level 16 between 2023 and 2025.

Chairman of the FCT Civil Service Commission, Emeka Eze, confirmed that the newly promoted Directors will fill 49 of the 63 vacancies across different cadres. He explained that the Education Officer cadre recorded the highest intake, with 20 officers promoted from a pool of 820 applicants. The Accountant cadre followed with nine slots, while others such as Civil Engineers, Social Welfare, Tourism, Fisheries, and Medical Officers each had one vacancy filled.

For the Administrative cadre, 12 candidates competed for 10 openings. Eze noted that the competitive process underscored the importance of merit-based advancement.

The examination, conducted through the Computer-Based Test (CBT) model, had a pass mark set at 60 percent. The Minister had earlier directed the adoption of a technology-driven process to ensure transparency and efficiency in the promotion exercise.

The promotions are expected to strengthen the leadership structure of the FCTA, while ongoing vacancies will be filled in subsequent phases.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has begun post-mortem deliberations following its poor showing in last weekend’s by-elections, where the All Progressives Congress (APC) won 12 out of 16 contested seats.

The PDP secured victory only in Ibadan North Federal Constituency, a performance party leaders admitted was too weak to ignore. In response, governors elected on the PDP platform converged in Gusau, Zamfara State, on Friday night for a strategy session aimed at charting a new course for the opposition party.

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, confirmed his arrival for the meeting on social media, saying the governors were united in efforts to strengthen the party ahead of the 2027 elections. Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal, host of the gathering, said the forum would hold a closed-door session today after an initial dinner on Friday night.

“The meeting will provide party leaders with the opportunity to discuss pressing political issues, plan for party unity and collaborate on developmental initiatives,” said Sulaiman Bala Idris, spokesperson to the Zamfara governor. He added that preparations for the party’s national convention, scheduled for November 15–16 in Ibadan, would top the agenda.

However, looming over the Gusau talks is the escalating rift between supporters of Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike and other party leaders. Wike’s loyalists have accused the PDP’s National Working Committee (NWC) of sidelining key stakeholders in recent zoning decisions, describing the process as “illegal and divisive.”

Led by House Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda, the group warned that it would resist any outcome of what it called “a brazen disregard for established structures.” The demands include recognition of the Dan Orbih-led South-South PDP leadership and the rejection of Chief Ali Odefa as National Vice Chairman (South East).

While some governors and NWC members have urged caution to avoid costly litigation, others are pushing for disciplinary action against Wike, citing his alleged anti-party activities. Observers fear that unresolved legal and political disputes could derail preparations for the Ibadan convention and weaken the PDP further ahead of the 2027 elections.

Meanwhile, the Africa Democratic Congress (ADC) fared even worse in the by-elections, winning no seat. Its only representative in the House of Representatives, Leke Abejide, declared that the party’s performance signaled the futility of any opposition coalition efforts against President Bola Tinubu’s APC if urgent reforms are not pursued.

For now, PDP leaders in Zamfara are under pressure to not only confront the party’s electoral failures but also find a path through the deepening internal cracks that could threaten its survival as Nigeria’s main opposition.

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has accused members of the opposition coalition of attempting to incite public unrest through propaganda and false narratives, insisting that their efforts cannot overshadow the tangible achievements of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Speaking on Friday during the commissioning of the newly rehabilitated Aguma Palace–Radio Nigeria–New Market Road in Gwagwalada Area Council, Wike dismissed the coalition’s criticisms as bitter reactions to the administration’s progress. He said those pushing negative narratives are simply pained by the rapid infrastructural development occurring in the FCT.

“Mr. President has devoted 16 straight days to commissioning projects. I didn’t know people were so pained until I saw one of the so-called aspirants complaining that the President, Vice President, and other top officials are unveiling projects while they claim Nigerians are angry,” Wike said.

He ridiculed the opposition’s timeline, questioning how a coalition could begin forming just six months into Tinubu’s presidency. “You started forming a coalition 18 months ago for a government that’s just two years in office? When will you stop deceiving Nigerians?” he asked.

Wike challenged critics to present their own track records, pointing fingers at former public officials who now seek to return to power despite having held top offices with little to show for it. “You were Senate President for eight years, Speaker for four years, Minister of Transportation for eight. But today you say Nigerians are angry. What did you do then to make them happy?” he asked.

Recounting his own political victories, the former Rivers State governor said he had consistently defeated political godfathers and “super ministers” in past elections. He mocked the latest coalition effort ahead of 2027, saying, “Now in 2025, they form another coalition. Dem born you born coalition?”

Highlighting the community-driven nature of current projects, Wike said the Aguma Palace–New Market road was selected based on local requests. “We didn’t sit in the city and decide. We asked the people what they wanted, and this is what they chose,” he noted.

He commended local contractors executing several ongoing projects in the FCT, emphasizing that empowering Nigerian talent is central to Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Addressing calls by opposition figures for Nigerians to take to the streets, Wike dared them to start their protests in their home states, bringing their own children along. “Don’t send other people’s children to the streets while yours are in London,” he said.

The minister assured residents that the FCT Administration would continue to prioritize community needs, expand rural infrastructure, and maintain its people-first approach. “Let those who don’t want to be happy stay unhappy. As for me, I’m always happy,” he concluded.

In a fresh move to calm Rivers State’s lingering political unrest, suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara has held a private meeting with his political mentor and estranged ally, Nyesom Wike, at the latter’s Abuja residence.

The meeting, held earlier this week, comes amid growing expectations that President Bola Tinubu might soon lift the state of emergency imposed on Rivers and restore Fubara to office. Although no official statement has been released detailing the outcome of the talks, insiders suggest the dialogue centered on reconciliation and political stability.

Mounting Pressure on Tinubu

Fubara’s supporters—particularly the group known as The Simplified Family—had anticipated that President Tinubu would announce the end of the emergency rule during his Democracy Day speech at the National Assembly. That moment never came. Instead, the President forwarded a formal letter to the Senate requesting confirmation of appointments made by the state’s emergency administrator, Vice Admiral (Rtd.) Ibok-Ete Ibas.

The development frustrated backers of the suspended governor, including Senator Seriake Dickson, who criticized the President’s silence on the Rivers crisis during his national address. Dickson described the continued emergency rule as “undemocratic” and likened the interim administration to a military regime.

Lawmakers Push Back

Dickson’s remarks have drawn sharp criticism from Rivers State’s National Assembly caucus. Led by Rep. Kingsley Chinda, the group dismissed the senator’s claims and questioned his authority to comment on the state’s internal affairs.

“Rivers is not under military rule. The current administrator is a retired naval officer, just like Senator Dickson is a retired police corporal,” Chinda said during a press briefing. He argued that retired officers are civilians and governed by democratic laws, insisting that the emergency rule was a constitutional necessity to curb escalating political instability.

The lawmakers also accused Dickson of influencing Fubara with divisive rhetoric that led to his political missteps and eventual suspension. They have called on the Senate Committee on Ethics to investigate what they termed Dickson’s “un-parliamentary” conduct.

Political Reconciliation Still Elusive

Despite Fubara’s outreach to Wike and President Tinubu, political reconciliation in Rivers remains stalled. Key stakeholders, including pro-Wike legislators and elder statesmen instrumental in Fubara’s 2023 election—OCJ Okocha, Sargent Awuse, and Ferdinand Alabraba—have reportedly been sidelined from the process.

“Fubara is yet to meet with many of those who shaped his political journey,” a legislative source told The Nation. “Without engaging them or the state assembly, the crisis is far from over.”

Former Emohua LGA chairman, Dr. Chidi Lloyd, echoed the sentiment, saying, “There’s nothing to celebrate about a return to office without first resolving the fundamental issues.”

Dickson Under Fire for Hypocrisy

Senator Dickson’s critics also point to his past as governor of Bayelsa State, accusing him of similar undemocratic actions—such as refusing to inaugurate opposition lawmakers and allegedly intimidating judiciary members.

Bayelsa State Assembly member Timi Agala-Omubo accused the senator of double standards. “He’s quick to condemn now, but his own record as governor shows a pattern of silencing opposition voices,” he wrote on social media.

What Next for Rivers?

With no clear resolution in sight, concerns persist about governance paralysis in Rivers State. The national legislature is yet to pass the state budget, and the suspended governor’s limited engagements suggest a return to office without full political buy-in could worsen tensions.

A former leader of the Ijaw Youth Council cautioned that any return to power must be preceded by honest reconciliation efforts. “If Fubara walks back into office without mending fences, the cycle of conflict will only continue,” he warned.

As the state grapples with leadership uncertainty, all eyes remain on Abuja—awaiting the next move that could either restore peace or deepen the crisis in one of Nigeria’s most politically volatile regions.

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has credited internally generated revenue from ground rent as a key driver behind the capital city’s expanding infrastructure, citing it as the lifeline for development in the absence of oil revenues.

Speaking during the commissioning of the newly completed Apo–Wassa axis of the Outer Southern Expressway (OSEX) II on Friday, Wike emphasized that the government’s enforcement of ground rent payments has made a tangible difference in Abuja’s landscape.

“This 15-kilometre stretch wasn’t magic. It’s what ground rent paid for,” Wike said, urging residents to see firsthand the transformation at Wassa Junction. He noted that these revenues have helped revive abandoned projects and fund critical road expansions.

The minister also announced upcoming plans to dualize busy routes and relocate informal businesses like roadside mechanics to ease traffic congestion and support urban planning goals.

Wike used the event to address the controversy surrounding the recent renaming of the International Conference Centre (ICC) in Abuja after President Bola Tinubu. Critics had questioned the timing and motivation behind the change, with some arguing the honour should have gone to the original builder.

In response, Wike defended the move, saying it reflected Nigeria’s need to recognize impactful leadership. “We changed everything in that centre except the block work,” he said, asserting that the transformation justified the tribute. He added that it is not unusual to name public structures after notable figures regardless of their involvement in their construction, referencing the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport and the Moshood Abiola Stadium as examples.

According to Wike, the renaming aligns with global practices and symbolizes the country’s aspiration to maintain its status as Africa’s leading nation.

Suspended Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has once again reached out to his predecessor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, in a renewed effort to resolve the lingering political conflict in the state.

Fubara reportedly met with Wike at the minister’s Abuja residence earlier this week, according to insider sources familiar with the development. Though a widely circulated photo of the duo was dismissed as outdated, sources confirmed that the visit occurred on Monday, marking another quiet attempt by the embattled governor to initiate peace talks.

The latest meeting underscores ongoing reconciliation efforts following a months-long political standoff that began shortly after Fubara assumed office in 2023. The fallout with Wike, his political mentor, quickly escalated into a full-blown crisis involving a split in the state legislature and threats of unrest from militant groups.

President Bola Tinubu declared a six-month state of emergency in Rivers State on March 18, 2025, suspending Fubara and appointing Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas as Sole Administrator. The move aimed to stabilize the state and prevent further deterioration of security, particularly around critical oil infrastructure.

Despite his suspension, Fubara has held separate meetings with President Tinubu in Lagos and London and now appears to be intensifying efforts to rebuild trust with Wike. The FCT Minister recently referred to Fubara as his “political son,” urging him to engage other key stakeholders in Rivers to achieve a comprehensive resolution.

However, Fubara is yet to publicly meet with other political leaders in the state, and his suspension has now entered its third month. As political uncertainty lingers, many observers are watching closely to see whether these reconciliation efforts will lead to meaningful progress—or further deepen Rivers State’s political divide.

In a significant move set to reshape the People’s Democratic Party’s (PDP) trajectory, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has forcefully called for the party’s presidential ticket in the 2027 general elections to be exclusively zoned to the southern region of Nigeria. This declaration emerged from a communiqué read by Wike following a late Monday meeting of influential party figures operating under the banner of “Concerned Stakeholders of the PDP.”

Wike stressed that this zoning arrangement is imperative for the PDP to uphold principles of fairness, inclusivity, federal character, and respect for its own constitution. He highlighted that this decision comes “after the unbroken years of Northern President under President Muhammadu Buhari,” indicating a push for regional balance in the nation’s leadership.

Beyond the zoning demand, the stakeholders also made a crucial pronouncement regarding the party’s internal leadership structure. They unequivocally affirmed Senator Sam Anyanwu as the duly elected and substantive National Secretary of the PDP. Wike emphasized that, in line with the party’s constitution, only Senator Anyanwu possesses the authority to issue notices for meetings of the National Convention, National Executive Committee (NEC), National Caucus, and the National Working Committee (NWC).

“To this end, all notices not issued by him and actions founded on them, including correspondences to INEC, are null and void and of no effect whatsoever,” Wike stated, underscoring the group’s insistence on adherence to party regulations and Supreme Court judgments.

The group further resolved that for the PDP to “finally arrest the inexorable drift towards extinction,” it must “without further delay, respect the judgment of the Supreme Court.” This strongly suggests ongoing internal disputes within the party regarding the National Secretary’s position.

By recognizing Sam Anyanwu as the legitimate National Secretary, Wike and the “Concerned Stakeholders” aim to assert a clear line of authority and bring stability to the party’s administrative functions, which they argue are essential for the PDP’s revival and its viability as a formidable opposition ahead of the crucial 2027 elections. The pronouncement on presidential zoning is likely to ignite further debate and jockeying for power within the party as the next electoral cycle draws closer.
