Afrobeats singer Kingsley Okonkwo, popularly known as KCee, has called on the public to show greater appreciation for people while they are still alive, following the death of Nollywood actor Alex Ekubo.

Reports indicate that Ekubo passed away on Monday at the age of 40 after battling cancer.

Reacting to the news via his Instagram page, KCee reflected on what he described as a common tendency for people to express admiration and affection only after someone has died.

He questioned why support, encouragement, and kind words are often delayed until funerals, instead of being shared when individuals are actively building their lives and facing personal challenges.

KCee encouraged people to be more intentional in expressing love and support to family members, friends, and colleagues while there is still an opportunity for them to feel it.

He also stressed the importance of checking in on people’s mental and emotional well-being, noting that words of encouragement can have a meaningful impact when they are received in real time.

In a lengthy post, the singer urged the public to embrace compassion, reconciliation, and active support for others before it becomes too late.

“We are all guilty. We’re too good at eulogies… and too late with love,” he wrote, adding that people often reserve heartfelt tributes for funerals instead of offering them during life.

KCee further questioned why appreciation is frequently withheld while individuals are alive, only to be expressed after their passing.

He appealed for a shift in behaviour, urging people to tell loved ones they are proud of them, support their work, and offer encouragement while they are still present to receive it.

The singer concluded by emphasizing that meaningful relationships and genuine support should be expressed in the present, adding that life should be valued and celebrated before it ends.

Nigerian singer Kcee has opened up about the emotional challenges he faced early in his music career, revealing that repeated exclusion from award nominations once left him deeply hurt.

The artist, whose real name is Kingsley Okonkwo, said he struggled with industry recognition during his early years in music, despite consistent effort and support from fans.

Speaking on the Afrobeats Intelligence podcast, Kcee recalled how the lack of acknowledgment from award organisers affected him personally, admitting that he once broke down in tears over the situation.

“I was doing a lot that the industry wasn’t recognising… I cried and I was pained,” he said, reflecting on the period when he felt overlooked.

He explained that over time, he shifted his mindset and stopped relying on awards as a measure of success, choosing instead to focus on the impact of his music and audience reception.

According to him, real validation came from fan support and breakthrough moments rather than trophies or nominations.

Kcee also highlighted the turning point in his career with the release of his hit single Limpopo, which he described as a moment of breakthrough that brought long-awaited recognition.

He further pointed to the viral success of his 2024 track Ojapiano, which gained massive traction on social media platform TikTok, generating hundreds of thousands of user-generated videos within days of release.

The singer, who began his career in church before rising to fame after winning the Star Quest competition as part of KC Presh in 2002, has since built a reputation for blending Afrobeats with highlife influences.

Over the years, Kcee has released several popular tracks including Okpekete, Tender featuring Tekno, Ojaginger, and Big Fish. His recent work continues to reflect his versatility across modern and traditional sounds.

His 2025 album Okonkwo and Sons Unlimited features collaborations with international and local acts, further cementing his presence in Nigeria’s evolving music landscape.

Kcee Opens Up on KC Presh Split: “It Was Never About a Disagreement”

Award-winning singer Kcee, formerly one half of the hip-hop duo KC Presh, has opened up about the pressures surrounding their split. In an interview with Yanga FM Lagos, he clarified that the breakup was not due to disagreement but musical differences.

“KC Presh’s breakup wasn’t due to any disagreement. We didn’t have any issue. It wasn’t because my brother [E-Money] wanted to open a record label. What happened was that we were doing different kinds of sounds. Presh was more of an R&B artist, while I do Afropop,” Kcee explained.

He admitted feeling pressured when Presh suggested pursuing solo projects, acknowledging his partner’s superior vocal abilities and the fan acclaim he received.

“People were praising him, saying he was the one holding the group together, so he was very confident. The majority of our fans supported him because they felt he was the better singer. But they don’t know the work that goes on behind the scenes. I was the one doing most of the work behind the scenes,” Kcee said.

Despite the challenges, Kcee credits the split for his subsequent success, noting that it pushed him to work harder and produce hit songs. He also revealed reaching out to Presh to join his label, 5ive Music, but the offer was declined due to lingering frustration from their split.

KC Presh first rose to fame after winning the Star Quest talent show in 2002, and the duo released three albums together before parting ways in the 2010s.

Kcee’s reflections highlight the realities behind music partnerships, where talent, style, and fan perception can influence career decisions, even when relationships remain amicable.

Afrobeats singer Kingsley Okonkwo, popularly known as Kcee, has shed light on the mindset that has sustained his long-running success in the Nigerian music industry, attributing it to an unshakeable commitment to consistency and a deeply rooted belief in positive thinking.

Speaking on the Selah Meditate podcast, the “Limpopo” hitmaker said he approaches music differently from many of his peers. Rather than becoming discouraged by slow moments or songs that fail to gain traction, he focuses on producing more work.

Kcee noted that flooding the studio with new material increases the chances of landing a hit, adding that he is never deterred by the numbers. “I can drop 22 songs—maybe it is the 25th one that will become a hit,” he said. “I don’t care because consistency is key.”

The singer also highlighted the role of positive manifestation in shaping his journey. He recalled a period when he and his brother, businessman E-Money, lived in Ajegunle but regularly spoke their dreams into existence.

“When me and E-Money were living in Ajegunle, if you asked us where we were living, we would say Ikeja,” he recounted. “We weren’t pretending—we were prophesying into the future. And that was where we eventually moved to, and we dominated it.”

Kcee added that maintaining optimism, even during difficult times, has helped him push through challenges and ultimately achieve his goals.
