Mohammed Kudus was the hero as Ghana sealed their place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a 1-0 victory over Comoros in Accra on Sunday.

The win saw the Black Stars top Group I with 25 points from 10 matches, becoming the fifth African nation to qualify for the tournament after Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, and Tunisia.

Backed by a packed 40,000-capacity crowd, Ghana dominated possession in the first half but struggled to create clear chances. Their breakthrough came just two minutes after the restart when Tottenham midfielder Kudus pounced from close range following a goalmouth scramble to put the hosts ahead.

The victory carried extra significance for Ghana, who had previously suffered back-to-back defeats to Comoros — including a shock loss at the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and another during the second round of World Cup qualifying two years ago.

The result also vindicated the decision of Ghanaian football officials to keep faith with head coach Otto Addo, who came under intense criticism after a poor 2025 AFCON qualifying campaign that saw the Black Stars finish bottom of their group.

Ghana will now make their fifth World Cup appearance, with their best result coming in 2010, when they reached the quarter-finals in South Africa before losing to Uruguay on penalties.

The remaining four automatic African slots for the 2026 World Cup will be decided on Monday and Tuesday, with Benin, Cape Verde, Ivory Coast, and Senegal currently leading their groups.

Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has provided insight into Ghana’s 2-1 defeat to long-time rivals Nigeria in the semi-final of the Unity Cup held at the Gtech Community Stadium in London on Wednesday night.

Ghana fell behind early as the Super Eagles took control of the match, with goals from Cyriel Dessers and Semi Ajayi giving Nigeria a commanding lead. Although substitute Thomas Asante pulled one back for the Black Stars with 20 minutes remaining, it wasn’t enough to mount a full comeback.

Addressing the media after the match, Addo attributed the loss to his side’s lack of familiarity and cohesion, citing the absence of several key players as a significant factor.

“It’s not always easy, especially when we have players who haven’t played together often,” Addo explained. “Nigeria has a more mature team that adapted quicker. We struggled to press, engage in duels, and maintain our defensive structure.”

Despite the defeat, the coach remained optimistic, pointing to the learning experience for the newer players in the squad as they continue to build towards future competitions.
