Despite the intense interest from the Turkish Süper Lig giants, the deal never reached fruition, and Lookman ultimately completed a high-profile move to Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid during the January window. Gardi, a seasoned negotiator with a deep history of facilitating major acquisitions for Galatasaray, disclosed that the initial opportunity to secure Lookman arose following the collapse of the winger’s projected transfer to Inter Milan. According to the agent, the intention was to replicate the creative financial structure used for Osimhen—a temporary loan arrangement bolstered by a future purchase clause.

“Especially with top-level players, sometimes transfers don’t fall through. There are endless variables. Last summer, after his [Ademola Lookman’s] deal with Inter fell through, I tried for Lookman; I wanted to emulate the Osimhen operation. A loan with a purchase option. But his club didn’t want to let him go. I tried again in January, but this time the demands from the Bergamo club were too high.”

The resistance from Bergamo proved to be the decisive factor in the summer, as Atalanta’s hierarchy remained steadfast in their refusal to sanctioned a departure under the proposed terms. As the winter window approached, Gardi and the Istanbul club revisited the negotiation table, only to find that the price tag set by the Italian side had escalated beyond their valuation. This financial barrier effectively ended Galatasaray’s pursuit, clearing the path for the Spanish giants to finalize a permanent deal for the reigning Europa League final hero.

Lookman’s transition to La Liga marks the end of a long-running saga that teased Turkish football fans with the possibility of an all-Nigerian strike force. While the “Osimhen formula” was successfully applied to bring the former Napoli man to Turkey, the “endless variables” cited by Gardi ensured that Lookman’s career path led to Madrid instead of the Bosporus. For Galatasaray, the failure to secure the 28-year-old remains a significant “what if” in a season defined by ambitious recruitment and high-stakes maneuvering in the continental market.

The 2018 World Cup winner, who was present at the stadium performing punditry duties for DAZN, praised Lookman’s impeccable timing and decision-making on the pitch. After the final whistle, Griezmann personally presented Lookman’s match-worn jersey to Umtiti, acknowledging that the Nigerian international had become the primary focus of the evening. This performance marked Lookman’s first goals in front of the Atleti home supporters since his winter move, cementing his status as a key offensive weapon for the Madrid side.

“Keep going like this, you have to keep going,” said the two-time La Liga winner to Lookman. “Players like Antoine (Griezmann) are really smart, and Julian (Alvarez) is also very skilled with the ball. So you have to keep going,” Umtiti said again, encouraging the 2024 CAF Player of the Year to maintain good teamwork and play well with his teammates.

Lookman responded by highlighting the instinctive chemistry shared by the Atletico squad, crediting his teammates’ spatial awareness for his rapid integration into the team. Since arriving from Atalanta, the 28-year-old has enjoyed a prolific start to his Spanish career, accumulating two goals and two assists in just three appearances across all competitions. His ability to link up with established stars like Griezmann and Álvarez suggests that Simeone has found the perfect catalyst for Atletico’s late-season trophy push.

“I think all the players are really good at that, so they kind of know where everyone else is on the field,” Lookman said, praising the awareness of the Atleti players. “So, it’s mostly about knowing what to do and when to do it, which is nice to play with them.”

With the return leg scheduled for March at the Camp Nou, Atletico Madrid now carries a significant psychological and mathematical lead. Umtiti’s public endorsement serves as a testament to Lookman’s growing reputation on the European stage, particularly as he continues to outshine seasoned veterans in high-stakes fixtures. Fans and analysts now wait to see if Lookman can maintain this elite level of consistency as Atletico Madrid pursues their first Copa del Rey title in over a decade.

Atalanta officials have notably softened their stance, reducing their financial demands from a rigid €50m to a more realistic €35m. This pivot follows a tense summer where the Bergamo-based side blocked Lookman’s potential move to Inter Milan by citing his high release clause. With approximately 18 months remaining on his contract, the Italian club now appears willing to negotiate to prevent their star asset from entering the final year of his deal and potentially leaving for free in 2027.

While transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano confirms Diego Simeone’s long-standing admiration for Lookman, the race remains wide open with multiple elite suitors. Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen has reportedly been lobbying for his compatriot to join him in Istanbul, while reigning Serie A champions Napoli have intensified their own inquiry. Despite earlier interest, a group of Premier League clubs including Arsenal and Chelsea recently opted out of the running, leaving a clear path for a continental or Turkish move. Lookman’s elite pedigree remains undisputed after he recorded three goals and four assists at AFCON, following his historic hat-trick that secured the 2024 Europa League title.

Transfer market analyst Ekrem Konur reports that several elite European clubs have received notification of the new price tag. Despite a slight dip in his domestic scoring rate, Lookman recently reminded scouts of his elite pedigree at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where he contributed seven goal involvements for the Super Eagles. His historic Europa League final hat-trick in 2024 remains a major selling point for potential suitors seeking a proven big-game performer.

Current interest spans multiple leagues as the January deadline approaches. Fabrizio Romano confirms that Atlético Madrid maintains a long-standing interest in the 28-year-old, though the Spanish side has not yet submitted a formal bid. Meanwhile, Galatasaray remains active in the race, bolstered by Victor Osimhen’s public efforts to recruit his countryman to the Turkish capital. Domestically, Napoli has entered intensified negotiations with Atalanta, testing the club’s resolve regarding sales to direct Serie A competitors. Although a quintet of Premier League giants previously passed on the opportunity, the reduced €35m fee could reignite interest from the English top flight before the window shuts.
