The Supreme Court has declared the local government election held on October 5, 2024, by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) as invalid.
In a ruling delivered by Justice Jamilu Tukur, the court found the election to be in violation of the Electoral Act.
Justice Tukur stated that the actions of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission were void due to a lack of substantial compliance with the Electoral Act and its guidelines. Specifically, the court noted that voter registration continued even after the election date had been announced.
The court further emphasized that the processes leading up to the local government election were rushed and clearly violated Section 150 of the Electoral Act.
