Migrants rescued by a charity ship off the Italian coast have thrown themselves into the sea, in an attempt to swim their way to the nearby Italian island of Lampedusa.
The NGO Proactiva Open Arms that owns the ship warned the situation was “out of control”.
Footage released by Open Arms founder Oscar Camps showed four refugees in orange vests diving into the sea, forcing several crew members to give chase bring them back aboard.
The boat which is carrying 107 migrants was rescued near Libya two weeks ago and has been anchored near the island of Lampedusa trying to get permission to dock.
Italy’s anti-immigration interior minister Matteo Salvini has denied the vessel access to Italian ports. However, on Saturday minors were allowed to disembark on the orders of the country’s prime minister.
