Spain sees record single-day death toll with 849 fatalities


Spain has again hit a new record of fatalities in the ongoing coronavirus pandemic ravaging the country, with 849 deaths in one day, bringing the overall death toll to 8,189.

According to the Spanish health ministry, the number of confirmed cases has also increased to 94,417, up from 85,195.

The increase comes a day after the country saw a slight drop in the number of deaths but with both new infections and deaths up around 11% each, Spain is seeing a slight rebound in the outbreak.

Spain has the second-highest coronavirus death toll behind Italy, where more than 11,000 people have died to date from the disease.

The number of people with COVID-19 who have died in Catalonia, one of Spain’s worst-affected areas, also rose 262 over the past 24 hours. More than 5,600 people currently need intensive care treatment while close to 20,000 patients have recovered from the disease.
