South Africa declines request to host Afghan refugees

South Africa has refused to take in refugees from Afghanistan claiming it is currently accommodating a substantial number of refugees from other countries.

According to the country’s Department of International Relations, South Africa is already home to a substantial number of refugees and is seized with addressing their needs.

The government said it had been approached to consider receiving a number of Afghanistan refugees who have sought refuge in Pakistan.

The request is that they be accommodated in South Africa en route to their final destinations,”

But in response, they replied that South Africa was not in a position to accept them as the refugees will be best served by remaining in Pakistan, their first country of arrival.

Some other African countries, including Rwanda and Uganda, have agreed to host Afghan refugees as they wait to be resettled in other countries.
