Shallipopi Declares He Won’t Attend Headies Again After 2025 Ceremony

The 17th edition of the Headies Awards took place on April 27, 2025, at the Landmark Event Centre in Lagos, marking the award’s official return to Nigerian soil after two years in the United States. Themed “Back to Base,” the night was meant to celebrate excellence in Nigerian music, drawing in a crowd of artists, industry executives, media figures, and celebrities from across the entertainment landscape.

Among the night’s performers was Shallipopi, who delivered a high-energy set and took home the award for Best Rap Single with his hit track “Cast,” featuring OdumoduBlvck. However, despite his win, the rapper took to X (formerly Twitter) shortly after the event to express his dissatisfaction with how the ceremony was handled.

In a post that many interpreted as criticism of the event’s planning, Shallipopi stated that he would not be attending any future Headies ceremonies. He cited issues with the organization, including delays, poor award presentations, and what he described as an overall lack of professionalism.

The rapper further distanced himself from the recognition, saying he didn’t even want the award for Best Rap Single and suggesting that it should be given instead to “actual rappers.” His comments have since fueled renewed conversations about the Headies’ declining reputation, which some say has been undermined by recurring issues with execution and consistency.

Shallipopi was also a nominee for the highly coveted Next Rated category, which was ultimately won by OdumoduBlvck. The night featured standout performances from artists like OdumoduBlvck, KCEE (who received the Special Recognition Award), Flavour (recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award), as well as rising talents Qing Madi and Ayo Maff.

While the Headies remains one of Nigeria’s most prominent music awards, the fallout from this year’s edition has once again sparked debate about its credibility and future.
