Senate panel meets members-elect over Edo Assembly crisis


The Senate ad hoc committee have met with lawmakers backed by the APC national chairman, Adams Oshiomhole.

The committee is investigating the crisis in the Edo State House of Assembly, between lawmakers loyal to Governor Godwin Obaseki, and the 14 lawmakers-elect that were left out of the inauguration ceremony have the backing of Oshiomhole.

Member-elect representing Uhunwonde State Constituency, Washington Osifo, said they did not receive any communication from the Clerk on the inauguration.

Speaking on behalf of the aggrieved members-elect at the meeting, he accused the Obaseki of “unleashing terror” on them using state apparatus.

Chairman of the committee and Deputy Chief Whip of the Senate, Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi (APC, Niger), called for calm.

He assured the lawmakers that the upper legislative chamber is working to restore public peace and order in the state Assembly.

On June 17th, 10 out of the 24-member Assembly were inaugurated under controversial circumstances.
