Senate Confirms Yakubu Mahmoud as INEC Chairman for Second Term

The Nigerian Senate has confirmed Prof. Yakubu Mahmoud as Chairman Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The confirmation followed consideration of a report presented by chairman of the senate committee on INEC, Sen. Kabiru Gaya (Kano South).
In their separate submissions, lawmakers believe that Prof Mahmoud Yakubu has proven to be unbiased and apolitical therefore he deserved a second term. They further charged the Just Confirmed INEC chair on improvements to the country’s electoral process.
Senate then moved into the committee of a whole to consider the report before the questions for his confirmation was put up for vote by senate president Ahmad Lawan’
The nomination of Professor Mahmood Yakubu for Appointment as Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC in accordance with the provision of Section 154(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999( amended), the President of the Senate, Senator Ahmad Lawan referred the name to Committee on INEC.
