Former Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, has dismissed speculation suggesting he intends to leave the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the reports as baseless and politically motivated.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media, Sam Onwuemeodo, Okorocha denied claims circulating on social media that he had described the APC as “a party desperate to hijack power.”
“I never made such a statement. It is the handiwork of those who feel threatened by my political presence,” the former senator said.
The viral quote, which attributed damning words to Okorocha about the ruling party, has been widely circulated online in recent days. However, he insisted that such remarks contradict his long-standing commitment to the APC—a party he helped form in 2013.
“How could I accuse a party that has been in power since 2015 of being desperate to hijack power? What power again?” he questioned.
Okorocha recalled being the only sitting governor from the South-East who joined the APC during its infancy, at a time when the party had little traction in the region. He said his bold move came with significant political risks, including ridicule and doubts from regional leaders.
“Despite the odds, I stood by the APC and was unanimously chosen by my colleagues as the pioneer Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum,” the statement noted.
Okorocha reaffirmed that if he ever had any issues with the party, he would address them directly, not through “badly written” social media posts or backdoor insinuations.
“I speak my mind openly. I don’t hide behind fake news or online fabrications to express my views.”
He concluded by emphasizing that he remains a loyal APC member, focused on the party’s unity and strength as Nigeria prepares for future electoral contests.
