Reekado Banks Reflects on Leaving Mavin Records Too Early

The singer admits his decision to exit Mavin Records was premature, though not driven by conflict, as he navigated music business on his own.

Nigerian singer Reekado Banks has opened up about his exit from Mavin Records, admitting that his departure may have come sooner than it should have.

The award-winning artiste, who gained prominence under Don Jazzy’s label, revealed in a recent conversation with reality star Teddy A on the Echoo Room that while his exit was not tied to any dispute, the move turned out to be premature.

Reekado Banks joined Mavin Records in 2014, the same year he clinched Rookie of the Year at The Headies Awards. A year later, he bagged the highly coveted Next Rated award, solidifying his place as one of Nigeria’s rising stars.

In 2018, he announced his departure and launched his own outfit, Banks Music. Reflecting on that decision, the singer explained that his contract with Mavin had already lapsed two years prior, but instead of renewing, he chose to venture out on his own.

“It wasn’t a conflict situation,” he said. “I was young and determined to leave. My contract had ended two years before, but I allowed it to run. After five years, I decided to move on. I thought I was ready, but once I stepped out, I realised how premature the decision was.”

Despite the challenges, Reekado Banks maintains that the experience has been an important part of his growth, teaching him the realities of handling the business side of music independently.

Since leaving Mavin Records, he has continued to release music under his imprint, carving his own path in Nigeria’s vibrant music industry.
