Public hearings into Trump impeachment commences

The United States House of Representatives has begun the first public hearings in the impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump.

Top diplomats, Bill Taylor and George Kent are the first to testify before the House Intelligence Committee in Washington.

Trump is accused of withholding vital security assistance from Ukraine and pressuring President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to investigate his political rival, Joe Biden, an allegation the US Presidency has repeatedly denied.

The impeachment effort could see Trump removed from office, but only if the House impeaches him and the Senate convicts him.

Since the launch of the inquiry, the House Intelligence Committee and the Oversight and Foreign Affairs committees have jointly called witnesses behind closed doors.

These are the fourth impeachment hearings in US history and the third to be televised
