Former presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Prince Adewole Adebayo, has firmly dismissed claims that he would step down for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television Wednesday night, Adebayo responded to growing speculation that Atiku might seek the SDP’s platform to re-contest the presidency in 2027.
“I will not step down for Atiku Abubakar,” Adebayo declared. “And to be fair, he has not asked anybody to step down for him either.”
He emphasized that the SDP is not a personal political vehicle for anyone, stating that both he and Atiku must follow democratic procedures if they wish to contest on the party’s platform.
“Neither I nor Atiku Abubakar can ‘use’ the SDP. The party belongs to the Nigerian people,” he said. “What can happen is that those who believe in the ideology and vision of the SDP can come into the party through the proper process. We are not available to be used. If you want to join us, join us—on principle.”
Adebayo’s remarks come amid reports that several opposition heavyweights are exploring the formation of a coalition to challenge President Bola Tinubu in 2027.
Notable figures linked to this proposed alliance include: Atiku Abubakar (PDP), Peter Obi (Labour Party), Nasir El-Rufai, former governor of Kaduna State
The coalition, according to sources, aims to merge platforms or collaborate strategically to unseat the ruling APC government in the next general election.
Adebayo, however, appeared cautious about such arrangements, reiterating the importance of ideological alignment and respect for internal party democracy.
“We welcome alliances based on values and governance priorities—not opportunism,” he added.
