President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda has appointed Gen Wilson Mbadi as the new commander of the Ugandan army.
Mbadi who was at a point the President’s personal bodyguard was promoted from deputy army commander to his new position.
Having seen him as a high performer, President Museveni in 2007 appointed Mbadi as his Aide De Camp(ADC) until 2012 when he was appointed the commander of the fourth division sitting in Gulu and later Joint Chief of Staff of the UPDF in 2013.
In 2017, Museveni appointed Mbadi as the new Deputy Chief of Defence Forces in the UPDF, a position he has served in until today when he was appointed as the new Chief of Defence Forces.
Also, Gen Peter Elwelu who until now has been the commander of land forces has been apoointed as deputy army commander.
However, the president’s son, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who was the commander of the Special Forces Command (SFC) of the Army has now taken over Elwelu’s previous position.
There are reports that Museveni who has been President of Uganda since 1986 has been reorganizing the army over the last several years, where younger officers have increasingly replaced the old officials in senior positions.
