The Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Umar Damagum, has addressed the recent resignation of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar from the party, calling for calm and affirming the resilience of the PDP.
Atiku, who officially announced his departure two days ago, attributed his decision to the party’s departure from the founding ideals that once defined its identity. His resignation followed his involvement in forming an opposition coalition that has now adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its political platform.
Reacting to the development, Damagum acknowledged Atiku’s contribution to the party over the years but maintained that the PDP remains intact and committed to its role as Nigeria’s leading opposition voice.
“We acknowledge his decision and wish him well. The PDP is bigger than any individual and will continue to stand for democracy, unity, and good governance,” Damagum said in a brief statement.
Atiku’s defection marks a significant shift in Nigeria’s political landscape, particularly ahead of the 2027 elections. His new alliance under the ADC umbrella is expected to reshape opposition strategies in the coming months.
Despite the high-profile exit, PDP insiders suggest the party is focused on internal reforms and strategic planning to maintain its relevance and electoral strength nationwide.
