The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said over 5,000 smart card readers were destroyed in the fire that engulfed its head office in Akure, Thursday.
Resident Electoral Commissioner of INEC in the state, Rufus Akeju, Confirming this at a news briefing on Friday.
He told journalists that the inferno started at about 7:30 pm after the office had been closed for the day.
According to him, 5,141 smart card readers were destroyed in the fire.
Akeju stressed that things could have been worse, had it not been for the timely intervention of the Fire Service.
While he was unable to confirm the cause of the inferno, the INEC REC said appropriate agencies are already investigating the incident.
