Senior Staffs of the National Identity Management Commission across the country has embarked on an industrial action causing a complete halt to the ongoing National Identity Number (NIN) registration.
This was made known by a statement signed by the President of the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria, NIMC branch, Lucky Michael, and its Secretary, Odia Victor.
According to the statement, the strike had become necessary due to the exposure of staff to COVID-19 risks, lack of personal protective equipment, irregularities in promotion and poor funding.
Hundreds of residents were seen as early as 8am at the NIMC office in Lagos earlier today but the workers there refused to attend to the applicants, saying they were on strike to demand better welfare packages from the Federal Government.
The Nigerian Communications Commission in December 2020 ordered all telecoms firms to disconnect all SIM cards not linked with NIN by the end of January 2021, hence, the cause of the mammoth crowd in the NIMC offices which is a breach of the COVID-19 protocol.
