Nigeria’s D’Tigress Beat Mali To Win Historic 3rd Consecutive Afrobasket Title

Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, the D’Tigress have recorded a historic achievement of winning the Afrobasket championship for the third time in a row on Sunday.

The defending champions have been impressive all through the tournament defeating Mali 70-59 to be crowned champions of the 2021 edition in Yaounde, Cameroon.

Ify Ibekwe’s double-double and 15 points from Victoria Macaulay saw D’Tigress complete a hat-trick of the FIBA Women’s Afrobasket.

Fellow Tokyo 2020 Olympians Ezinne Kalu and Adaora Elonu also weighed in with 13 and 12 points respectively as Nigeria cruised to another continental triumph.

However, Elonu and Kalu were made the tournament’s All-Star Five and Elonu was voted the MVP of the tournament.

This is Nigeria’s 5th Afrobasket title with previous successes in 2003 and 2005.

The D’Tigress have also qualified for the 2022 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Australia.
