Nigeria overtakes India as worlds highest contributor to Under-five deaths

Nigeria is now the worlds number one contributor to deaths of children under the age of five, overtaking India who previously held the position.

The United Nations children’s Fund, UNICEF, announced this in a statement on Tuesday.

The development comes a year early, as the world Bank had in 2018 predicted that Nigeria will become the country with the highest Under-five deaths by 2021.

In the latest report titled Levels and Trends in Child Mortality, UNICEF said Nigeria recorded an estimated average of 858,000 under-five deaths in 2019 against India’s 824,000 deaths out of 5.2 million under-five deaths globally.

The data, which covered a period of three decades, from 1990 to 2019 – showed that 49 per cent of all under-five deaths in 2019 occurred in just five countries, which are Nigeria, India, Pakistan, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Ethiopia.
