The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has vowed to play a significant role in the burial of late Nigerian football icon Christian Chukwu, reaffirming its commitment to honoring his lifelong contributions to the sport.
Chukwu, a revered former national team captain and coach, passed away on April 12 at the age of 74.
“NFF will participate fully in his burial. Chukwu is a hero,” said NFF President Ibrahim Gusau, during a condolence visit to the Chukwu family in Enugu. Gusau was represented by the NFF First Vice President, Felix Anyansi-Agwu, who led a delegation of South-East state FA chairmen.
Praising Chukwu’s dedication, Gusau said, “He gave his all for Nigeria—both as a player and coach. His legacy is unforgettable.”
The NFF visit aimed to coordinate with Chukwu’s family regarding funeral plans. His son, Emeka Chukwu, expressed gratitude to the federation and confirmed that full burial arrangements would be announced soon.
Others in the delegation included NFF Executive Committee member and NNL Chairman George Aluo, along with FA chairmen from Enugu, Imo, and Anambra states.
Christian Chukwu, nicknamed “Chairman,” led Nigeria to its first AFCON title in 1980 as captain and later managed the national team from 2003 to 2005. His death has drawn widespread tributes, though it has also reignited concerns over unpaid entitlements.
