Members of Abuja Newspapers Distributors Association (ANDA) have taken to the streets of the Federal Capital Territory to protest the killing of a vendor identified as Ifeanyi Okereke Elechi by a policeman in the convoy of Speaker of House Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila.
Elechi was hit by a stray bullet from a security aide to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Honourable Femi Gbajabiamila, on Thursday evening.
The Speaker earlier on Friday released a statement condemning the act and describing it as unfortunate.
According to him, Elechi was shot by the stray bullet, which was only intended to disperse a crowd while he was exchanging pleasantries with the newspaper vendors on his was out of the National Assembly.
He thereafter added that the officer who fired the fatal shot has been suspended from the convoy pending the conclusion of the investigation.
While sending his condolences to the family of the deceased, the Speaker expressed distraught about the incident.
President of ANDA, Benji Obute, explained that the wife of the slain newspaper vendor recently had a newborn baby and he was planning to have the naming ceremony for the baby on Saturday.
The group is however requesting for justice for their member who was unjustly killed
