239

The Nigerian Bar Association Section on public Interest and Development Law NBA-SPIDEL has berated the National Assembly for passing a bill imposing jail terms of at least 15 years on anybody who pays ransom to free kidnapped victims.

The Senate last week passed a bill seeking to amend the Terrorism (Prevention) Act, 2013, to prohibit the payment of ransom to kidnappers in Nigeria.

Condemning the act, the section in a press conference in Lagos lamented that the lawmakers are on a suicide mission with the law adding that there is an urgent need to tackle the menace of kidnapping in the country.

The group thereafter called on the House of Representatives to jettison the Bill without any further consideration.
