The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) in Rivers State has uncovered a group allegedly distributing suspected fake drugs under the guise of evangelism.
At a press briefing held on Monday in Port Harcourt, Chukwuma Oligbu, NAFDAC’s South-South Zonal Director, revealed that the group was traced to the Abuloma Community Town Hall, where its activities were exposed.
Oligbu stated that one member of the group was caught administering a suspected fake product to an unsuspecting member of the public. The products in question were immediately confiscated and taken to the NAFDAC office for further investigation and proper documentation.
He disclosed that the group had been distributing unregistered items including eye drops, bottled water, cleansers, and tablets. Some of the products identified were labeled as Evangelist Jenkins Supernatural Water, Evangelist Jenkins Cleanser, and Evangelist Jenkins Eye Drop.
The group reportedly claimed these products could cure various ailments, including gastrointestinal disorders and eye problems. However, Oligbu noted that several individuals who used the eye drop reported experiencing swollen eyes an adverse effect the group bizarrely claimed was a sign the product was working.
Oligbu assured the public that NAFDAC would conduct thorough testing on the seized products to determine their composition and take appropriate action.
He also warned the public to avoid accepting unregistered drugs and medical items from individuals or groups operating under the pretense of evangelism or offering free treatment.
