Moroccan journalist jailed on abortion charges

A Moroccan journalist Hajar Raissouni has been sentenced to a year in prison for premarital sex and illegal abortion.

The court sitting in the capital Rabat, also handed Raissouni’s fiance, Rifaat al-Amin a one-year sentence for alleged complicity while Dr. Mohammed Jamal Belkeziz, accused of performing the abortion, was sentenced to two years in prison.

Raissouni and al-Amin were both arrested outside a clinic in Rabat on 31 August. After interrogation, the police went ahead to detain Belkeziz and two medical staff who said they had performed an emergency procedure on Raissouni to remove a blood clot.

The 28-year-old denied having an abortion, saying she had only sought treatment for internal bleeding.

Raissouni works for an independent newspaper critical of the authorities, and observers say her arrest concocted to crack down on criticism of the government.
