The Swiss women’s national team player and captain of Young Boys’ women’s team, Florijana Ismaili, has passed away at the age of 24.
She had been missing since Saturday after a swimming accident on Lake Como in northern Italy.
“It is the painful duty of the Swiss Football Association to announce the death of our international player Florijana Ismaili,” the SFV said in a statement. “We are all shocked, saddened and in deep grief.”
The SFV said that Ismaili had jumped into the water from a rented boat and never resurfaced. The body was found on Tuesday after searches by the Italian authorities, it said.
“The SFV expresses its sincere condolences to the family, relatives and friends of Florijana Ismaili and wishes everyone all the strength in this difficult time.”
Young Boys added: “We will always remember Florijana with great fondness.”
FIFA president Gianni Infantino said in a statement that it was an “extremely sad moment for all the football community, particularly at a time when we gather at the FIFA Women’s World Cup.”
“UEFA and the European football community is deeply shocked and saddened by the death of Florijana Ismaili, and extends its deepest sympathy to her family and friends at this sad moment,” UEFA’s President Aleksander Čeferin said.
Ismaili made her senior international debut in 2014. She went on to make 33 appearances, scoring three times, and was a member of Switzerland’s squad at the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada. She joined Young Boys in 2011.
