The situation in Mali today is said to be tense as the head of the military junta Colonel Assimi Goïta, has declared himself the country’s transitional president, after stripping the country’s interim president Bah Ndaw and former prime minister Moctar Ouane of their powers.

Ndaw and Ouane were detained and taken to a military base on Monday in what was seen as Mali’s second military coup in nine months but were released from detention late on Wednesday night.

The move by the military followed a cabinet reshuffle, which saw two army officers involved in the previous coup lose their jobs.

During a televised briefing, Goïta complained that Ndaw had failed to consult him about the new cabinet and stripped him and Ouane of their powers which made the duo resign.
