Mali conflict: Security expert says Mali must address security problems head on

The current political crisis facing Mali continues to be a subject of discourse, especially as France has withdrawn its troops from the country, after nine years of military presence.

Speaking in Brussels, French President Emmanuel Macron says the withdrawal is necessary as the EU and France no longer share the same diplomatic priorities with the government of Mali.

Macron disclosed that most of the troops will now be redeployed to other countries within the Sahel, where the EU and its African fighters are fighting al-Qaeda and Daesh terrorists.

Speaking on the withdrawal of these foreign troops from Mali, security expert Kabir Adamu, says the move will subsequently affect the security architecture in Mali as well as the Sahel region in general, adding that the challenges faced by Mali must be tackled head-on, by addressing the root causes such as disruption of democracy and poverty.
